Coney Island was first up and running in the late 1800’s and has been a tourist attraction as well as a friendly greeting for immigrants arriving when the Coney Island Elephant was introduced. Now there are various rides, arcade games, aquarium, baseball, beach, and much more. The Haus team went and spent a full day trying out everything it has to offer. This weekend Coney Island will host the annual Mermaid Parade, and in a couple weeks the famous hot dog eating contest. Here are a few of our favorites;
The raceway at Coney Island is not to be missed. Grab up to 10 friends and hit the tracks. Tickets are $10 and the race lasts up to 10 minutes. Make it more interesting and bet on a round of victory drinks.
Filled with mostly little kids, the aquarium has various tanks as well as outdoor sea animals to visit including, sea lions, penguins, and walrus.
Open since 1916 and home of the hotdog eating contest, Nathans is a must try. Everything from hotdogs, to sandwiches, fries and much more. The corn dog is our personal favorite fried to a crispy sweet perfection. Use a lemonade to wash it all down. The line might be long, but the wait is worth while. Not a big hotdog fan? Visit the taco stand further down the boardwalk. Make up to 3 custom tacos $10 or a burrito. There is also a cocktail bar available with specialty margaritas or an ice cold beer. Open Containers are permitted within the food stand boundaries only.
4. The Thunderbolt Roller Coaster
June 14th was the grand opening of The Thunderbolt and everyone was ready to rock n roll. The extremely fast and extremely steep ride was in constant motion. It does not compete with the historical Cyclone which was built in 1927 but we can assure this is a more comfortable and smoother ride. Which one is safer is still up for debate. Try them both out and be part of two different centuries.
Stop in the Brooklyn Beach Shop for stylist souvenirs. They have swimsuits, tanks, t shirts, salt water taffy, flip flops, and more. Shirts are around $25 for a super soft cotton. Old school meets new school perfection in this surf shop. They even have baby clothing, and beach chairs.
6. Brooklyn Cyclones Baseball Game
End your day at a Brooklyn Cyclone baseball game. Games start at 6 but get there early and meet some of the players out front by the parking lot. On the left with one of our stylist is #13 Jhoan Urena and #17 Scarlyn Reyes. Opening day was close to sold out but other games are usually able to get at the door. Tickets are only $10-$16 depending on where you would like to sit. Some games have post fireworks with musical themes. It was a victorious day for the cyclones and hopefully one day we will see these guys playing in the big leagues for the Mets. It does get windy so bring a sweatshirt with you.
